I photographed Barbara (the matriarch of this photo on the top left) at a business shoot recently and she must have liked her photos, because she hired me to photograph her whole family. We met in Clinton with the iconic Red Mill as the background. I gave her some guidance on what to wear and she nailed it. Solid nuetral colors work best and try to match, I always say. They were such a great family, we ended up photographing a whole lot more groupings than we had originally scheduled.
Even if you can't get everyone in your group to match as well as this family did, try to get everyone to agree on dark colors or light colors. Like jeans and a dark top, or khakis and light top. You want everyone to blend. You don't want any one person to jump out of the photo. When everyone blends together, it creates balance and symmetry. A family portrait like this is classic and timeless.
